This is why I will never be the CEO of a Global Corporation. Well, that and my inability to maintain an acceptable level of personal hygiene.

Oh, and the contagious skin disease.

Actually the somewhat less sordid truth is that I discovered this sheet of letterhead paper tucked inside an old 1957 edition of “An Atlas of Anatomy for Artists” that I bought used at Powell’s bookstore on a recent visit to Portland. This drawing seemed to suggest itself as the natural conclusion to that fortunate coincidence.

This portrait of Hubert H Humphrey is now appearing at the Salvage Vanguard Theater Gallery in Austin, Texas as part of the ‘Presidential Losers' exhibition.

The show opened this weekend and is being held in conjunction with Gnap! Theatre Projects upcoming 44 Plays for 44 Presidents stage production which will be opening at the Theatre on October 5th. It features 75 portraits, one of every contender who ever lost the U.S. Presidential Election.

My contribution, Hubert H. Humphrey lost the the 1968 election to that that delightful character Richard Nixon. Humphrey was also Lyndon Johnson’s VP, and “Hubert who?” was allegedly Johnson's response when, because he was unable to attend Winston Churchill’s funeral, an advisor suggested he send Hubert along as his representative. Humphrey did not attend the funeral.  The other quote is from HHH himself, and seemed appropriate considering the forgettable outcome of his Presidential ambitions.

It may be Monday but I hope nonetheless that everyone is feeling Special and Golden. Personally speaking I’m in a state of near constant ecstasy, although I like to maintain the external demeanor of someone who has just trodden in a particularly abhorrent dog turd.

You could however cheer me up no end by buying this picture and hanging it on your wall.

Here’s a couple of pieces I’m contributing to The Compound Gallery’s ART IN A BOX service.

Art in a Box is an art subscription service based on the model of CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) boxes, it delivers original works of art to subscribers instead of vegetables. It features local Bay Area artists and is operated by the awesome Compound Gallery in Oakland. Subscribing is simple, just supply three adjectives to describe your art taste, describe the types of media you like or dislike, and choose how often you want to receive boxes (every month, every other month, quarterly, etc.), and you will receive a carefully chosen piece of original art in your box each month of your subscription.

Find out all you need to know and subscribe right here.

If you’re in the San Francisco Bay area and you’d like to have a look at some of these Apology pieces for real I’ll be showing a bunch of them as part of Raw SF, at 1015 Folsom St, SF. on Thursday, 26 July, from 7:00pm - 12:00am.

Raw SF is described as “30+ of the Bay’s emerging & legendary underground artists all coming together to cause a boundary pushing event of unparalleled proportions”

The mind boggles.

I’ll probably just put it back on the shelf again though.

The rest of the book can be perused here.

I have a bunch of works (including the one pictured above) in a show at the Studio Gallery, at 1815 Polk Street, between Washington & Jackson in San Francisco. It’s a juried show called the SF Etsy Show and features work from a number of San Francisco based Etsy sellers. More details here.  My Etsy page, which will give you a pretty good idea what I have in the show, is right here. It’s on from today (May 2nd) until May 27th, and there’s an opening reception on Saturday May 12th 2- 6pm.

Oh and just in case anyone’s still interested in this painting, it’s now available for Online purchase at the fantastic Compound Gallery.
